MISHA
The tests were kinder, the people looking at me like I was actually a humanâor maybe even better considering how they all felt about humans. I didnât see the doctor again after the revelation that my DNA was slowly evolving into something elseâsomething between human and Wolf. Instead, I saw nameless nursing staff who took vials of blood, and orderlies who gave me food, and techs who wheeled me to and from x-rays as they monitored the change in my bones.
And I didnât need to have a biology degree to know that I was going to die the moment my body tried to reshape itself into a wolf. Because I was not one.
It was why, even with my fatherâs ability to change my DNAâsomething no scientist should have ever been able to accomplishâI was going to die.
And I could feel it too. No one would tell me what was going on, but I started to feel sicker. Iâd wake in the middle of the night with my bed drenched in sweat, a horrific, empty ache in my gut, my skin feeling like it was on fire. I was filled with a need for something that didnât make any sense. I had no words for it, no name for it. My eyes burned, and the tips of my fingers itched like claws wanted to break through.
And I knew when that happened, it would be over.
I wasnât brave enough to look at myself after the morning the doctor showed me what I was becoming, but I didnât need to. Every time I blinked, I saw the orange flash of an Omega staring back at me. They eventually returned to brown, but they didnât stay that way. They were forever altered.
Time began to bleed together, and I lost track of how long Iâd been there. It might have been minutes, it might have been hours. Hell, it might have been days or weeks or months. I couldnât eat, I couldnât sleep, I didnât want to move.
Every so often, my thoughts would drift to Kor, and it was only remembering his warm hand touching my arm and the feeling of him close that kept me from falling off the edge. But with every breath, the pain and discomfort got worse.
I knew it wouldnât be long before I begged for death.
It had to be somewhere in the afternoon when the door to my room opened. I hadnât even realized I was on the floor until the rush of air hit me, but I must have moved down from the bed at some point, hoping the tiles would cool me off. My skin was burning, something deep inside my stomach aching, and I heard myself give the most mortifying whimper when two sets of feet stepped into the room.
Seconds after an overwhelming scent hit me, I heard a voice that made me want to cry out. âWhere the fuck is he? I can smell him.â
A ragged groan ripped from my throat, and I turned my head farther to the side in time to see Kor push past the doctor with his hands outstretched.
